I’m Dania, a 2023 Mechanical Engineering UTP graduate. Currently working as a Wireline Field Engineer at SLB United Arab Emirates. I started enjoying mechanisms and how things work from a young age, problem solving in an efficient manner was fun, which led me to the job I have now. Being passionate and resilient in what you do makes all the difference.

Q: Why Field Engineer?

Challenges and self development keep me going in life. Being in this field expands my capabilities while allowing me to enjoy STEM. To handle oil and gas rig projects accurately, requiring to learn and grasp new technology fast, handling multiple clients, especially as the only female in a male-dominated site, it shows you the limitless possibility you could reach.

Q: How Does Your Work Benefit the Community?

I’ve directly handled CCUS projects for clients from different countries. For example, 44.01 project in collaboration with AirCapture that captures atmospheric CO₂ and converting them permanently into rock formations. The solution is designed to remove 1000 tons of CO₂ per year, and gigaton CO₂ levels by 2040.

Q: What skills do you think are required for a Field Engineer?

Critical thinking, communication skills, asking-the-right-question skills, project and time management, attention to detail, analytical skills.

Any advice for juniors who wish to pursue as a Field Engineer?

1. Find your goal – What role you want to work as, which company, where; local or overseas, when is the opening, the requirements, who and how to showcase what you can bring to the table.

2. Know how far you are – What exactly are you lacking in that list of requirements; certifications, internship experience, knowledge, visibility, opportunity/openings.

3. Draw a roadmap – How do you attain the requirements eg. online free courses, LinkedIn optimization, career/STEM fairs. If any is impossible, there is always substitutions to a certain requirement.

4. Be persistent and patient.

5. When you think you’ve made it, don’t get comfortable and continue putting efforts until your goal is met 100%.
